Alliance & Leicester

The Alliance & Leicester was formed when the Alliance and Leicester building societies merged in 1985. It became the first clearing bank to acquire a clearing bank when it bought Girobank from the Post Office in 1990. It then demutualised and became a bank in 1997.

These days Alliance & Leicester is perhaps best known for a range of excellent current accounts but it also offers personal loans. At the time of writing Alliance and Leicester is offering a personal loan exclusively to readers of The Motley Fool with a typical interest rate (APR) of 6.8%.

Alliance & Leicester offers secured loans too. Secured loans differ from personal loans because they are literally secured against your home. Your home will be at risk if you can’t meet your loan repayments. But if you take out a personal loan, it’s much harder for the lender to take possession of your home.
