Donna Werbner's Blog

Money is better than poverty - if only for financial reasons.

My Top Three Favourite Websites

When I first started using the internet, way back in 1996, I remember it being quite a frustrating experience. Sure, there was email – but no one I knew had an email address, so what was the point? Similarly, I could find very few worldwide websites that were worth visiting – unluckily for me, Fool.co.uk was not set up until 1997.

But still, I could see its potential.

Well, sort of. If I had really seen its potential, I wouldn’t be writing this. I’d be off enjoying my millions on a yacht somewhere, after setting up a website that allowed you to search the information superhighway using strange musical beats that, I am reliably informed, are called algo-rhythms. And then I’d call it something really silly, like Gaagle or You-hoo!

So OK, no, I didn’t see its potential. But I did see was that the internet was a fabulous place to spend a lunch hour – particularly if you were just a teensy, eensy little bit bored.

(You, dear reader, are the exception to the rule, of course. Clearly, you’re not reading this blog because you’re bored. Oh, no. Far from it….. Zzzzzzz)

Um, er, anyway, my point is, however much the internet has changed, this aspect of it has not. It is still a wonderful place to spend a lunch hour – especially if that hour makes you richer.

Here are three websites I use to regularly save myself some dosh (apart from The Fool – obviously!):

- HotUKdeals. On this website, you can find details of ‘hot deals’ and discount vouchers – but with a twist. These deals and discounts are not publicised by the companies, but by you and me. It’s an exemplary example of how people use the web to help other people, from the kindness of their tight-fisted, penny-pinching hearts. I always look on there before I do my online grocery shopping, because – as Laura Starkey pointed out in this podcast – you can always find a voucher worth at least as much as the cost of the delivery. (In terms of deals, my favourite find on there today is a crockpot slow cooker from Woolworths, marked down from £32.99 to £15.)

-Quidco. This is a cashback website - fantastic if, like me, you often spend money online. So far, I’ve earned £85.83 and I joined less than two months ago. And I promise, I haven’t bought anything I wouldn’t have bought anyway… although it is very tempting. Especially if you can combine the two sites – so find a bargain on HotUKdeals and then buy via Quidco.

- Mysupermarket.co.uk. I’ve already banged on about this in a previous post, but I have to say, I’ve used it twice now and I will never go back. On last shop I cut down the cost by 30%! OK, so I did end up with an unexpectedly huge tub of butter because it was the cheapest per gram but I guess sometimes you just have to take the rough with the smooth. (Groan.)

That’s it for now. I have some nifty tools I like as well, so that will be my next post. In the meantime, if you have any cool websites you use regularly to cut your bills/save yourself cash/hunt down a bargain, do comment and let me know about them – I realise these three are probably only the tip of the money-saving iceberg!

I've found an alternative to Quidco which only started in Feb 08.

It's got over 1500 suppliers on there at the moment including alot of the big names such as M&S, Next, Argos etc. You can also book holidays and get other services such as car insurance etc.

I tested it out last week and bought some ink cartridges and cheap aftershave. I got a couple of good deals, And the commission came to about 4% of my spend, which is not bad at all.

Commission mounts up in your account until it gets over £20. As soon as that happens the company send a Cheque out.

You basically log onto the website, go to top right hand corner and sign up for your own shop ( FREE ) and then give it a name. IE Jimmys Shop..

Then just do all your on-line shopping from it. You get a username and password to log in and see your account details.

What I like about it is you can invite other people to do the same, if there sign up through your own shop, once you get so many, you are entered into a profit sharing scheme. Bit like the Co-operative Stores.

I saved a packet ( and leg work ) doing my Xmas shopping on-line last year. I intend to save even more this year by going through Ei42.

If you join Quidco you are a foolish Fool. CashBackKings and TopCashBack give you 100% of the cashback but without having to pay the £5 fee that Quidco charges.

And if you are a really canny Fool you can do the daily recurring sites and earn without spending money. Not every recurring site will pay you every day (they seem to work for some not for others) but you will be able to work out the best ones for you. And you will be surprised how quickly you are earning money.

And you can earn by signing up to emails. Yes they are a pain in the butt. So you have a special free email account just for them.

Just to add.

There is no fee with Ei42,. not like Quidco.

I bought a jacket from Marks and Spencers yesterday and got 2.25% commission today..

Six people signed up on my site and now they are getting cashback as well.

I do recommend this site, it's going International soon as well..

Hi there,

This is all realy interesting useful stuff. I have another great site for you to check out to help out with those Christmas presents, now the purse strings have been tightened! http://www.discountd.co.uk is a UK site offering coupons, deals AND offers across a huge variety of stores. They have a tagging system and have highlighted those items that we're likely to want tobuy for Christmas - always helpful!

Compare cashback credit cards

American Express Platinum Cashback Card

My favourite credit card at the moment is a cashback card from American Express. For the first three months, you get 5% cashback. After that, the rate goes down, but I like knowing that at least for the next three months I can get 5% off everything I buy. You need to be able to pay off your credit card bill every month to use this card.
